We are seeking Champions from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. We encourage people from all walks of life to apply. We provide individualised support to each Champion to reduce barriers to participation.

Frequently Asked Questions

General

The Community Champions Program is part of the WA Digital Inclusion Project. We recruit members of the community to become Champions. Champions get training to organise and run digital information sessions. These sessions can be for friends, family or members of your community who are or have been digitally excluded. Champions receive eftpos gift cards for attending training and running their own sessions.

Champions are community members who run digital information sessions as a part of the program. These sessions can be with friends, family or community members who are or have been digitally excluded. A Champion gets training and resources from the Project team.

The digital information sessions focus on using digital technology. They cover:
• scam awareness and eSafety,
• where to find reliable information online, and
• how to connect with further training opportunities.

The Project will pay for a venue if needed and provide support to Champions.

You can be a part of the Program for a few weeks or a few months. Champions must run at least one digital info session to at least 10 people. Some Champions have wide networks and can run more sessions.

As a guide, you can expect that applying, interviewing and training can take about 6 weeks.

Apart from running digital information sessions with your community, as a Champion you also get:

  • Training on digital skills and how to organise and run training sessions,
  • An eftpos gift card for attending training and for running your digital information session,
  • A loaned device to run your session with (if you don’t already have one),
  • Support from the Project team throughout your participation in the program,
  • A Certificate of Completion when you finish participating in the Program that will be posted or emailed to you, and
  • Experience that could go on your CV or resume.

If you still have questions about the Program, please get in touch with us.

Eligibility

Community Champions come from a wide range of backgrounds. If you live in WA and meet some simple criteria, you can become a Champion too!

To become a Champion, you must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older,
  • Commit to participating in training and delivering your own digital information session,
  • Be able to reach at least 10 people in your community who are or have been digitally excluded,
  • Be able to lead a conversation using Project materials to people you know after training,
  • Have some lived experience of digital exclusion,
  • Be willing to complete a Participant Agreement,
  • Be willing to share experiences, e.g. through completing surveys or an interview,
  • Have basic digital skills (outlined below), and
  • Not be engaged to deliver this as part of your employment.

For more information, refer to the Community Champions Selection Criteria.

To become a Champion, you will need:

  • Some basic digital skills, such as the ability to present a PowerPoint, play a video file, send an email, send a text message, and
  • Confidence in using a digital device to present information to a group of people.

After completing an Expression of Interest, we will have a conversation with you, either in person or online, to understand your confidence and digital skills. We will ask you some questions about you and your community. After this conversation, we will let you know if you were successful by email. Once you have signed your Participant Agreement, you will be invited to attend the next suitable training session.

Disability is no barrier to participation in the Community Champions Program. We provide resources in accessible formats to support inclusion. We will also discuss any support you need to attend training and run a session during your interview.

We already have Champions from a wide variety of backgrounds. We have found that this allows the Program to reach a variety of communities. We welcome any people with disabilities to get involved.

If you need support to complete an expression of interest, please contact us.

All facilitation training is currently delivered in English. You will need a basic understanding of English to take part in the training. You can deliver information sessions in any language. We provide translated resources for you to run sessions in your preferred language.

The Community Champions Program aims to provide information to the community through peer-run sessions. This means that Champions are community members, not people doing this as a part of their job.

The Program is not for staff of community service organisations, CRCs or government agencies. If you want to discuss your individual circumstances with us, please get in touch.

The Project runs training for community sector staff and organisations. To find out more about free staff training, email us on [email protected]
